Interview with Ms. Amber

Based on your experience, what is the success key factor in learning English?

I believe there are 3 important elements in successful English learning. The first and foremost element is that revive the Interest and Motivation to learn. Many adult learners lose their learning interest and motivation when they were at high school. The second element is E dan O. E (Exposure) referes to how people ivolve English naturally in their life day by day. O (Opportunity) refers to how many opportunities that people get to use English. The third element is the Learners’ Self Awareness and Independence. Learning a language requires a lifetime, successful language learners are able to identify the field or aspect that they need to improve and apply personal strategies to improve their learning. As a trainer, it is very important to support the development of these 3 elements from the beginning of the program. The main purpose of trainer is supposed to be developing Learners’ Independence attitude.

What is one of the biggest challenges that is faced by the learners?

To change their thinking patterns about how to learn and use a language and also to build up their confidence. Most of the learners start the program or workshop with an idea that they need to learn first, refining their English and then communicate. In Indonesia, they call it “Takut Salah” (the fear of being wrong). In general, mistakes are considered as something negative. However, learning a language is different from learning Mathematics in which a mistake can be severe. In language learning, making mistakes is really important for the learners’ skills development. Every mistake that is made by the learner is a golden chance for their skills improvement. Learning a language is strongly related with making mistakes. We try to communicate and in the process, we learn, not the other way aound. Building up a confidence does not come in a day. Confidence comes from being courageous and dare to take the challenge. So, to support and to encourage learners to face the cahallenges and celebrate the success are the keys.

What do you like most in teaching and giving training?

To bring the enthusiasm – motivating someone and help them to improve their target and goal.as a trainer, your particpant’ success becomes your success as well. This is the most beneficial aspect in my job and this thing that makes me love my job.
